The Tang Dynasty Dinner Show

Part 11 in the 15 part series on China

Segment 328 features short cuts from the outstanding Tang Dynasty Dinner Show which recreates music from the " Golden Age" of Chinese history, when the arts, music, culture, education, and performance were all encouraged and thrived.

We enjoy a banquet of dumplings, dim sum, shaped like the contents of the interior foods, ranging from walnuts, to mushrooms, to eggplants, to egg, and other varieties of vegetables. The only choice I found offensive was the shark, as it is on the endangered species list, as compiled by the Monterey Bay Aquarium website in California, which I happened to be familiar with because I produce an entire series on the Endangered Species of the World, and have focused on their " Seafood Watch" program and cards, and thusly never order Shark Fin soup, or any shark products. But didn't have much luck in communicating this since I don't speak Chinese.

The Chinese largely eat a vegetarian diet, which is typically very healthy, if one is getting a good portion of vegetable proteins, which does not overfill, and which leaves you hungry for more food about every 2 to 3 hours. Everything is deliciously prepared and the sauces China is famous for accompany every meal. Great attention is paid to presentation, always colorful, aroma, and balanced and varied flavor.

By this time everyone in the group is becoming quite proficient with their chopsticks, which allow food to be savored bite by bite. The locals know how to hold their rice dishes close to their mouths to prevent spillage, and for quicker eating techniques.

Carbs and dumplings raise everyone's serotonin levels, providing feelings of well being as we sit back to enjoy the beautifully produced and artistically rendered stage settings, costumes, musical instruments of ancient China.

I am imagining how inspired and awed visitors to the Tang Dynasty must have felt if they experienced anything close to what we are viewing, and can't help but feel the modern take with exquisite lighting, fog machines, long flowing silk fabrics swirled about in dance, and modern dance fluidity and form, have lent an exquisite air to ancient instruments, music, and dance form, but the audience is transported, and you will be too as you watch the short cuts from a few of the performance pieces staged elegantly in tribute to the Tang Dynasty and ancient movement patterns of China so charmingly performed.
